To support international World Food and No Poverty days, on the 16th and 17th of October, the MUN Impact group focused on three main areas: 1. Reducing our food waste, 2. Spreading awareness of the issue, and 3. A food drive.

In order to reduce food waste in our student community, we raised our concerns about how much food was being wasted during our school’s travels for our Discover India and Week Without Walls trips. Thus, during the week preceding our DI/WWW trips, we talked to students during our school assembly and asked them to monitor the amount of food they took during meals by taking only the food they planned to eat and eating all the food on their plate. We also shared a video outlining the amount of food wasted globally each day.

Secondly, On October 16th and 17th, the MUN Impact group began the student-led ‘No Poverty, Yes Food!’ initiative to raise awareness about poverty and hunger that is greatly affecting many people in the community. In our school, we displayed informative billboards containing information about the causes and consequences of poverty and hunger, previous efforts to resolve the issue, and how these problems connect to our community: India.

At the same time, we asked students and members of our school to write about possible solutions and habits that they might start implementing to eradicate the issue of poverty and hunger, as well as asking them to wear an orange ribbon to show their support. We also displayed a United Nations video regarding poverty on all the televisions around campus to further encourage people to take meaningful actions.

Lastly, we placed donation boxes throughout campus and collected non-perishable food items to donate to a local orphanage named Seva Samajam Children’s Home - Guild of Service. On October 24th, a few members of the MUN Impact group had the opportunity to visit the orphanage to meet the children, and to deliver the donated food items.
