On September 17th, 2021, AISC celebrated the UN annual International Day of Peace by hosting an array of events and celebrating each student's culture and Nationality. Last year, in honor of the UN’s 75th anniversary, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hosted a worldwide dialogue on the topic of inequality in the time of COVID-19. After last year's success, we at MUN Impact have hosted another dialogue of our design on the topic of this year's UN Peace day theme “Recovering better for a sustainable and equitable world”. In this “UN76” discussion of ours, topics relating to geopolitical issues, climate change, covid-19, and inequality were discussed by the entire school community.

Theme
The theme for this year's UN Peace day encompasses so many of the sustainable development goals, and our MUN IMpact team at AISC decided to focus on four essential ones. The first is SDG 13, which is climate action. The questions asked during the dialogue were solution-oriented and encouraged participants to reflect on their current lifestyle choices, and their effect on the planet, as well as evaluate the role of National legislation on climate change.
SDG 10, reduced inequalities was another driver of the discussion. With the rise of social media use as a medium for social change when it comes to inequality, we, citizens have much more social power to lessen inequality. Participants extended their thinking and discussed the impact of inequality on people's lives and how inequality is lessened/resolved. Despite a year having passed since the UN75 Discussion, COVID-19 has remained a dominant factor in many of our lives. This directed our questions towards SDG 3, good health and wellbeing. Unlike a year ago, however, the situation has shifted and vaccines have become widely available. This shifted discussion into fascinating and important topics such as vaccine distribution and inequality. Finally, the UN Peace day discussion came full circle with the topic of SDG 16, peace, justice, and strong institutions, with the discussion surrounding geopolitical issues and ways to solve them.
We are proud to have hosted this event, and with over 80 participants and riveting conversations throughout, are ecstatic by its success.
